Adding links to your pattern
Adding links to your pattern
Link a word or phrase to a web page, such as your YouTube tutorial, your Etsy shop or your Ravelry page. The words stay as you write them, and in the downloaded PDF anyone can click them to open the page.
Add a link
- Double-click a text box or Pattern Box and click where the link should go. To turn words you have already typed into a link, select them.
- Right-click and choose Add link…, press Ctrl+K (Cmd+K on Mac), or click the link button to the left of the box.
- Type the Text to show, such as "My video tutorial", and the Link address, such as youtube.com/@yourchannel. You can leave out the https://.
- Click Add link.
With a box selected but not open for typing, the link button adds the link at the end of the box.
Links work in text boxes and Pattern Boxes. They are not available in table cells.
Show an icon before the link
Under Icon before the link, choose what appears just before the link's words, on the page and in the PDF:
- The site's icon. For an address on YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, Etsy, Ravelry, Pinterest, TikTok, Ko-fi, LinkedIn, Shopify, Payhip, LoveCrafts or Reddit, the dialog offers that site's icon, and a globe for any other website. A new link starts with it. These are each company's own logo, shown as they provide it. LoveCrafts' logo is its full name, so it is wider than the others.
- Any other icon. Click Other icon… to pick any of these icons whatever the address says. Use it for a shop on its own web address, such as a Shopify store at your own domain.
- Your own logo. Click Your logo… and choose a picture of your logo, such as a PNG or JPG. It is shrunk to fit a small square, and any transparent background is kept. Once one link uses your logo, the dialog offers it again for every other link in the pattern, so you only add it once.
- None, for a link with words only.
A shop on its own web address, such as a Shopify store at your own domain, cannot be recognized from the address. It starts with the globe; choose its icon with Other icon…, or use your own logo.
Edit a link like any other text
A link's words are ordinary text that happens to carry a link. With the box open for typing:
- Click in the link's words to put your cursor there, and type to change them.
- Select a link along with other words to copy, cut or paste it. A pasted copy is still a link.
- Press Enter just before a link to move it onto a new line, or center the line, bullet it or change its spacing as you would any other line.
- Select a link and choose a font, size, bold or italic, and its words change with the rest.
Typing just before or just after a link adds ordinary words, not more of the link.
Change or remove a link
Click in the link's words and press Ctrl+K (Cmd+K on Mac), or right-click it and choose Edit link…. The dialog opens, where you can change its words, its address or its icon, or click Remove link to keep the words as ordinary text. Open visits the page.
To visit a link from the page, hold Ctrl (Cmd on Mac) and click it.
Good to know
- Ctrl+Z takes back adding, changing or removing a link, one step each.
- Links are blue and underlined, so readers can see what to click.
